Colorado Springs, CO- The Fourth of July is one of America’s favorite holidays, and drinking is a big part of many celebrations. And, unfortunately, after those celebrations, many people will get behind the wheel after they’ve had too many drinks. Drunken driving is so common on Independence Day that it is the deadliest day on the nation’s road. So, is 2016 going to beat statistics from last year? The National Safety Council predicts it will and dozens more lives will be cut short by impaired drivers.
Some if the increase of road deaths can be attributed to the simple fact that there are more cars on the road, but drunken driving is probably the biggest reason for the rise in traffic deaths across the U.S. and Colorado Springs.
In a press release, the National Safety Council, this Fourth may be the deadliest on yet. They estimate that 466 people will be killed during the three-day weekend, making it the deadliest since 2008. The NCS also estimates that over 50,000 people will be injured in traffic accidents. Overall, the NSC says fatal traffic accidents increased by 8 percent between October 2014 and May 2015, which is why the agency believes there will be a significant increase in traffic fatalities.
“The number of people dying on our roadways is unacceptable,” Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council said in a press release. She added, “The Council issues these estimates not to scare drivers but to empower them to make safe decisions behind the wheel. We hope Americans will spend their holiday safely watching fireworks and celebrating with family rather than sitting in an emergency room.”
