On April 9th, emergency dispatchers in Herriman received several calls from motorists claiming there was a reckless driver in a pickup truck heading north on Mountain View Corridor, possibly coming from Saratoga Springs. Just two minutes after those calls came in, that same driver caused a fatal accident that left several severely injured and one dead. Lawrence Probert, 26, was the man behind the wheel of the GMC pickup truck that was driving erratically.
According to Desert News, Probert ran through a red light at the intersection of Mountain View Corridor and Rosecrest Road at a very fast rate, plowing right into a Chrysler minivan and a Dodge Dakota. Investigators said that the destruction from the crash so severe that they were unable to determine which vehicle was headed in which direction and even which was hit first. As a result of the accident, 5-month-old Alice Skankey who was traveling in the minivan was killed and a 26-year-old man, 24-year-old woman, and 3-year-old girl were all transported to a local hospital where they would receive immediate medical attention.
Inside the Dodge was a 34-year-old man who was also listed in critical condition. Aside from injuring many and killing a small child, Probert also sustained injuries himself along with a 24-year-old woman who was traveling with him. They both were taken to area hospitals via helicopter as well. It was later reported that the woman who had been traveling with Probert was ejected from the vehicle and was left paralyzed from the diaphragm down.
According to Fox 13, Probert told medical personnel who responded to the crash that he had “smoked meth” earlier in the day and eventually had his blood drawn that indicated the presence of methamphetamine in his system. Aside from the fact that Probert had caused a DUI accident that resulted in a fatality, because there was a warrant out for his arrest, he was guarded while admitted into the hospital by an agent from Adult Probation and Parole who was ordered to take custody of Probert once he was released from the hospital.
He is now being charged with manslaughter, DUI, and other charged.
What prior convictions does Probert have?
In 2016, the 26-year-old pleaded guilty of drug possession, a class B misdemeanor, in the 4thDistrict Court in Provo. He was sentenced to probation and later violated the terms of it. He was then ordered to appear in court but failed to show up. On February 7th, a warrant was issued for his arrest.
In 2011, Probert was convicted of theft by receiving stolen property and attempted theft by receiving stolen property. He was given a suspended prison sentence and placed on probation. In 2012, Probert was convicted of DUI but later violated his probation and was sent to jail for eight months in 2014. In 2015, Probert violated his probation again and was sent back to jail for 10 days. The pattern continued well into 2017 where he was eventually ordered to enter a drug treatment house.
