The accident happened around 1:00 a.m. Saturday, July 8th in Belleville on Illinois 15. The Belleville News-Democrat report that a 54-year-old man driving a pickup truck was traveling the wrong way on the highway when he collided with a small sedan carrying two passengers.

The two men in the sedan were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck was also seriously injured and was taken to a hospital where he is recovering. Police charged him with aggravated (felony) DUI and two counts of reckless homicide, according to Fox 2 Now.

During their investigation, police discovered that the drunk driver has several prior DUI charges on his record, the latest charge came in October 2016. The Belleville News-Democrat reports that the accused was also charged with DUI in 2000, 2005 and 2015.

Fox 2 News reports that the driver refused a breathalyzer when he was arrested in October 2016 and had his license suspended. That was later reversed by a judge who reinstated his driver’s license. It’s hard not think that these two deaths could have been prevented if the accused had his license taken away.
