Las Vegas, NV- A 25-year-old Las Vegas woman, was in court earlier this month after being accused of causing fatal drunk driving accident earlier this summer. What happened, and what penalties does the driver face?
The Las Vegas Sun reports that the accident occurred around 11:00 p.m. West Sunset Road and Quarterhorse Lane when a young woman struck a pedestrian and took off. The paper said that woman dragged the victim before striking another car and utility pole.
The pedestrian, a 28-year-old man, was killed. One victim testified that he was non-responsive following the crash, KSNV reports.
KSNV reports that the woman, identified as 25-year-old Whitney Greco, was arrested close to the initial accident site. According to police, Greco’s blood alcohol concentration was twice the legal limit, and she also had marijuana in her bloodstream. Police also said her windshield was cracked, indicating that the impact of the crash was severe.
During the preliminary trial, Greco’s counsel noted that victim was on the road talking on his cell when he was struck, so they claim she is not at fault for the accident and that she had the right of way, KSNV reports.
A date for Greco’s trial has not been set yet, but it will be a jury trial. A judge also agreed to reduce her bail from $1 M to $500,000, according to the TV station.
Drivers who are convicted of vehicular assault or homicide in Nevada face anywhere between two years in jail and 20 years. The stakes are high for drunken drivers, but sometimes for their victims, the stakes are higher and lives are lost. A family may find some justice in seeing the party responsible for their pain and suffering face the consequences of their actions, but that won’t alleviate their financial burdens.
