Jefferson County, FL- Alcohol affects drinkers in many ways. Their senses dull, physical reactions slow, and an intoxicated person is often unable to make rational decisions. Surprisingly, there are many drunk drivers all too willing to put their lives, the lives of others or their child at risk by driving under the influence. A Florida woman is in serious trouble after she caused a hit-and-run crash with her four children in her vehicle.
Florida Mom Crashes and Runs Twice with Four Children
An Orlando, Florida woman is facing several DUI-related counts after she caused two hit-and-run crashes with four children in her car on Sunday, January 20, 2018. WESH-TV reports that the first accident occurred at the intersection of Tampa Avenue and West Colonial Drive where she crashed into a car and fled the scene of the crash.
Fox News reports that a witness followed the impaired driver and saw her crash into a curb at the corner of Stryker St. and Peterson Pl., causing significant damage to her car.
A witness who heard the crash told Fox the two front wheels were bent in different directions, the airbags deployed and smoking. The witness also said she noticed there was a child in the crashed vehicle.
That witness said after the crash, three children got out of the car and were put in a neighbor’s car for their safety. The children said there was a baby in the car. Bystanders located the baby and removed it from the car.
None of the driver’s children were hurt.
The driver tried to back up and leave the scene of the second crash, but the damage was too severe.
Officers told WESH that the woman had a strong smell of alcohol and said they found an empty rum bottle in the car. The woman was charged with DUI and four counts of child endangerment.
Children and Drunk Driving Crashes
According to the American Association of Pediatrics, between 2001 and 2010 drunk driving crashes killed 2,344 children under the age of 15. Of those fatal crashes, 65 percent were riding with the impaired driver, often the child’s parent. That’s a staggering statistic and just goes to show how adversely alcohol affects a person’s mental processes and decision-making abilities. The more a person has to drink, the worse their judgment is, and they are prone to doing things a sober and rational person wouldn’t do, like drive drunk with a child.
