Mother and Infant Killed in New Orleans-Area Drunk Driving Crash
A fatal accident that left a mother and child dead and injured the woman’s soon-to-be- husband occurred on Christmas Eve in Tangipahoa Parish, just north of New Orleans across Lake Pontchartrain. A young couple, who just got engaged, was headed home from a family event around 8:44 p.m. when they were hit by a drunken driver fleeing a previous crash.
NOLA.com reports that the couple had just turned onto North Cherry Street in Tickfaw and was traveling at a slow speed when a drunk driver struck their car. The impact of the crash damaged the gas tank on the couple’s vehicle and it was engulfed in flames.
A witness stopped to pull the couple out of the wreckage.
A 19-year-old woman and her 7-month-old son were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Advocate. The 24-year-old man driving, who was the woman’s fiancé and the infant’s father, suffered burns and other minor injuries.
Police told reporters that the alleged drunken driver, 38-year-old Jillian Ramsay, was fleeing a prior crash when she hit the family’s vehicle.
Ramsay was arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, hit-and-run and careless operation, NOLA.com reports.

The latest data available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that there were 225 alcohol-impaired fatalities in Louisiana in 2016. While still a high number there were fewer DUI fatalities than in 2015 when 250 people were killed by drunk drivers in the state.
Nationwide, there was a 5.6 percent increase in fatal drunken driving accidents in 2016. Louisiana bucked that trend and experienced a 10 percent drop in alcohol-related traffic deaths for the same year, analysis from the NHTSA shows.
