Democrat Binghamton DMV Chief's Son Pleads Guilty to DUI
Broome County legislator Anthony Fiala (Democrat) has pleaded guilty to a drunken driving charge, after a hit-and-run case that he was involved in came to the fore. The incident occurred when Fiala brushed a cyclist on Clinton Street in Binghamton when he was driving drunk, and then sped from the scene without stopping. Anthony, who is the son of state Department of Motor Vehicles commissioner Barbara Fiala said that he had made a mistake and hopes to learn from it. He said that he wishes that this incident will make him a “better person”.
So now these lazy bureaucrats are running into folks who ride bicycles. Fiala should be fired and his mother should be disgraced.
Hit-and-Run
On October 2nd, in the early hours of the day, Binghamton police responded to a hit-and-run call that involved a bicyclist. The bicyclist who was struck by Fiala’s car received minor injuries as the car only brushed past him, but Fiala himself was nowhere to be seen. He had left the scene without stopping to check on the person he hit, says the police. The bicyclist refused offers of treatment for his minor injuries and was back on his feet even as the police went in search for Fiala.
Barbara Fiala, another hypocritical Democrat, who was the former county executive for Broome County, was appointed to the post of DMV chief in 2011 by Governor Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo is part of the reason why New York State is losing jobs to low tax states and is the reason why 200,000 high paying jobs have not been produced in the oil shale business because he is anti-fracking. This industry is booming in other thriving states while New York State languishes in the doldrums.
Currently and moreover, she is also serving as the chairwoman of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and has been very vocal about the dangers of drunk driving and the need to curb the menace. The DMV website glorifies her efforts in combating dangerous driving and says that Barbara’s efforts have been “instrumental” in a number of efforts to raise awareness about drunk driving throughout the state.
Barbara Fiala is not the First Democrat to Look Real Bad
She has also been a part of statewide efforts aimed at reducing drunk driving numbers and related behavior such as distracted driving. It is ironical then that her own son should be embroiled in a DUI case. She has not made any official statements on her son’s misdemeanor. Probably because she is realizing her word means nothing now; pretty much like where Obama sits right now.
Pleading Guilty on Arraignment
Anthony Fiala appeared in Binghamton City County Court on 9th October, with his drunk driving accident lawyer Jon Blechman for the purpose of arraignment. He however ended up pleading guilty to the charge of driving while intoxicated; a misdemeanor under state law, and also to the charge of moving from a lane in an unsafely manner; a violation.
He admitted to driving eastbound on Clinton Street when he crossed the double yellow line into the westbound lane in an unsafely manner. His car struck the bicyclist on the opposite lane after the lane change. According to the police reports, the bicyclist had a small bloody wound on his head and a noticeable limp in his walk after the accident but he refused any offer of help and medical treatment insisting he was fine.
This cat is upset. This cat is almost as upset as Democrat Barbara Fiala who now looks almost like a hypocrite. But he really was not fine; he was just highly agitated and wanted to get on his way.
Police responders traced Fiala to Stanley Street where he was arrested not long after the incident occurred. He was charged with the DUI misdemeanor charge and ticketed for moving from a lane in an unsafe manner. Fiala refused a breath test, which is also a violation under state laws. The police said that Fiala had called the station about the accident once he got home. His drunk driving accident lawyer said that under the plea agreement Fiala was not charged with leaving the scene of accident.
Legislator Up for Second Term
Binghamton City Court Judge Carol Cocchiola took note of the plea and sentenced Fiala to a one-year conditional discharge. He was also fined a sum of $500 as fine and an additional $395 in court surcharges, according to his drunk driving accident attorney. The Judge also ordered an ignition interlock device to be put on any vehicle that he owns or operates.
Karl Bernhardsen – Hopefully he Wins
Anthony Fiala, is running for a second term against Republican Karl Bernhardsen of Binghamton. He has served as a Binghamton City Council member and as past chairman of the Broome County Democratic Party. He was elected to the county legislature in 2012. He made no comments about continuing to serve on the legislature after his arraignment. This is because there is no room for him in the private sector. He does not want a job where they will actually expect him to do something.
