Alaska Man Jailed on DUI, Weapons Charges
35-year-old Edward R. Aragon has been charged with weapons possession and drunk driving after multiple incidents on Northern Lights on May 21st. Anchorage police report states that Aragon was driving a black 1986 Chevy pickup.
Aragon Drove Straight at a Policing Team Vehicle
APD dispatch was alerted at 8:48 pm of a driver speeding and cutting off other vehicles. The black Chevy reportedly collided with another vehicle on East 4th and Boniface. A minute later dispatch received another call of a man brandishing a firearm on the 5900-block of 6th Avenue while circling a black Chevy. No, this is not Chicago, St. Louis, or LA.
At 9:01 pm, Aragon reportedly drove straight at a Community Action Policing Team vehicle at 4th and Newell Street. The driver of the vehicle veered off into a parking lot to avoid a head-on collision. Other officers reported the car speeding at several different locations.
Meanwhile, Aragon continued driving westbound on Northern Lights Boulevard and struck a black Ford just west of UAA Drive.
Drunk Driver Stopped By Spike Strip
Aragon was finally stopped at Northern Lights/Glenwood intersection with the help of a spike strip. He continued driving with two flat tires, but was stopped next to Planet Fitness at 670 East Northern Lights.
He reportedly lit a cigarette and finished off his beer before exiting the vehicle. Aragon was verbally non-compliant and refused to participate in Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. Because he showed signs of impairment and was being combative, officers arrested him on DUI charges without attempting a breathalyzer sample.
Aragon was charged on Assault III, Reckless Driving, DUI, Leaving the Scene of a Crash, Driving w/out Proof of Insurance, Misconduct Involving a Weapon IV, Fail to Stop, and Driving on a Revoked License. He was remanded to the Anchorage Correctional Facility.
A search warrant was later issued for the vehicle to impound it even though an alcohol bottle and handgun were visible in plain view. Aragon was allowed to consult with a DUI lawyer.
Penalties for Drunk Driving in Alaska
First-time offenders charged with DUI or DWI face a fine of minimum $1,500 and at least 72 hours in prison. The revocation period for first time offenders is at least 90 days. This makes it important to consult with a skilled drunk driving accident lawyer as soon as possible.
Anyone who is charged with a second DUI within 15 years of the first conviction is looking at a minimum fine of $3,000 and 20 days in prison. It is necessary to consult with an experienced DUI attorney because the license revocation period is at least one year.
