DUI Suspected in Triple-Fatality Crash Involving Off-Duty Police Officer

California Highway Patrol is investigating a fiery crash that killed three people in Whittier as a drunk driving accident. KTLA reports that the crash occurred around 10:15 p.m. on September 26, 2017, on the 605 Freeway.

CHP told reporters that a 28-year-old off-duty LAPD officer was driving his Camaro at a high rate of speed when he rear-ended two vehicles, a Nissan and a Scion. The impact caused the Nissan to burst into flames, trapping three people inside. All three, two Riverside parents and their teenage son, were killed.

The woman driving the Scion had minor injuries.

The off-duty officer broke his nose and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. After his release, the man was arrested for suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

Police suspect alcohol was involved and have launched a criminal investigation, KTLA reports.

NHTSA data shows that fatal DUI accidents in the state increased 16.2 percent in 2016, which was the second consecutive year drunk driving crashes increased. In 2015, fatal alcohol-related crashes increased 7 percent.
