Florida Trooper Injured by Drunk Driver at the Scene of a Prior Crash

A Florida Highway Patrol Trooper sustained severe injuries after he was hit by a drunk driver in Northeast Miami-Dade County on Sunday, December 10, 2017.

The Sun Sentinel reports that Trooper Daniel Cruz was responding to an accident on the Palmetto Expressway near the Okeechobee Road ramp around 1 a.m. when he was struck. The FHP said Cruz was at the scene of a two-vehicle crash when a drunken driver hit one of the wrecked vehicles. That vehicle was pushed into the other car which was propelled forward and hit Cruz.

According to the FHP, Cruz was thrown and landed on the ground, causing serious injuries. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital and is currently in stable condition.

The drunk driver, 26-year-old John Bencosme, was arrested at the scene for suspicion of drunk driving. The Sun Sentinel reports that his blood alcohol concentration was 0.201 percent which is significantly higher than Florida’s legal limit of 0.08 percent.
